988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline¶
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. You can call or text 988 from any phone. The service is operated by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and answered by a network of over 200 local crisis centers across the United States.
Family caregivers face elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. The 988 Lifeline serves as the primary crisis resource when a caregiver's distress reaches a level that requires immediate professional support. Specialized options are available: press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line, press 2 for Spanish-language support, or text 988 if calling is not possible.
In GiveCare's crisis routing system, 988 is mandatory in every first crisis response. When Mira detects a safety signal — whether through explicit language or a spike in P6 (Emotional Wellbeing) scores — the 988 number is always included before any other resource1. This reflects the gate ordering decision that safety preempts all other system behavior.
When you call 988, a trained crisis counselor will answer. They will listen, provide support, and help you think through next steps. If there is immediate physical danger, they can coordinate with local emergency services. The call is free, confidential, and available regardless of insurance status. Average wait times vary by time of day but are typically under five minutes.
The 988 Lifeline addresses zone P6 (Emotional Wellbeing) directly. It is the frontline resource for the "Distress" and "Imminent" safety tiers that GiveCare monitors.
