SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance)¶
Federal insurance program providing monthly cash benefits to workers who become disabled and can no longer perform substantial gainful activity. Based on work history and payroll tax contributions, not income-tested.
Monthly cash benefit based on lifetime average earnings. Average SSDI payment approximately $1,630/month in 2026 (2.8% COLA). Maximum benefit varies by work history. After 24 months of SSDI, recipients become eligible for Medicare. Trial work period allows testing return to work at $1,210/month threshold without losing benefits. SGA limit: $1,690/month non-blind, $2,830/month blind (2026). Work credits: $1,890 in earnings per credit in 2026 (max 4 credits/year, $7,560 total). Generally 40 credits needed (20 in last 10 years), younger workers may qualify with fewer. 5-month waiting period before benefits begin. At full retirement age, SSDI converts to retirement benefits at same amount.
