Family Paid Caregivers¶
Family Paid Caregivers allows Medicaid members enrolled in Agency-Based or Self-Directed Community Benefit programs to hire any family member or friend as a paid caregiver.
Eligibility¶
- Care recipient must have a qualifying disability
- Relationship: spouse, child, parent, sibling, other relative, non relative
Questions to ask the program¶
These are questions to ask the program, not a verdict on your eligibility. Confirm the current rules directly with the program.
- Does the person receiving care live in New Mexico? — Residency is usually the first thing a program checks.
- Does your relationship to the person — spouse, child, parent, sibling, other relative, or non relative — count for this program?
- What counts as a qualifying disability or level of care need, and what documentation shows it?
- Is there a caregiver-specific department, coordinator, or support line? Ask for it by name. — Many agencies have one that isn’t advertised on the website.
- What documents do you need from us to start an application?
- Is there a waitlist right now, and how long is it?

How to apply¶
- ABCB members: if using an LRI as caregiver, contact the member's health plan Care Coordinator for approval; if not an LRI, contact the member's current home health agency to become an employee; caregiver then becomes an employee of the home health agency and uses EVV to track hours. SDCB members: the member or their Employer of Record selects a caregiver (contacting the health plan first if the caregiver is an LRI), then works with the Support Broker to start the employment process.
