LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program)

Federal block grant program helping low-income households pay heating and cooling bills, providing crisis energy assistance, and weatherization services.

Four types of assistance: (1) heating bill payment help, (2) cooling bill payment help, (3) crisis/emergency energy assistance for shutoffs, (4) weatherization/energy efficiency improvements. Average benefit ~$400-$600/year per household. Funding is limited — not an entitlement.

Eligibility

  • Household income at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level
  • U.S. citizenship or qualified immigrant status required
